Today we launched our new service offering Allergen Workshops in line with the (EU 1169/2011) Provision of Food Information to Consumers Regulation; Article 44: National Measures for Non Pre-packed Food, coming into effect in December 2014 for the catering & hospitality sector.
Regulation requirements state that all allergen related foods need to be clearly showcased on menus from:
- convenience stores (deli’s)
- mobile caterers
- fast food outlets
The aim of this regulation is to make it easier and safer for customers with allergies to purchase products.
The Allergen Workshops will train food service staff to know the 14 allergens listed by the European Commission. Participants will understand food allergens, food allergen control, how to identify allergens in raw materials and how to present this information on their menus, point of sale notices and tickets. This is so as to comply with the new regulation coming into effect on 13th December 2014.
Failure to comply can result in a £5000 fine for each dish.
Teresa Dupay, nutritionist and founder of MenuAnalyser states, “This is excellent news for anyone serving food as you will be able to attract a huge amount of new customers who have not been able to eat out until now. These new customers have wanted to be able to eat out with their families and friends but have not dared to for fear of having a reaction to a specific ingredient.”
This view is further reinforced by a recent survey conducted by Coeliac UK whereby it revealed that 74% of its members would eat out at least once every two weeks if they could be confident of a gluten-free meal. This equates to an estimated £100m additional turnover per year for hoteliers, restaurants and publications, (Hospitality Review, April 2014).
Rhonda Montgomery, Director of Montgomery Food Consulting states, “Our main objective is to benefit the public supply of safe, wholesome, nutritious food through the application of sound science and technology and to give support to local businesses.”
